TIMELINE
WHY danceTO.ca?
DanceTO is more than just a film project, it is a collective.
Dance is a key part of Toronto's history, and some of the greatest dancers come from styles studios consider "street styles".
We want to pay homage to our Legends who put Toronto on the map, support and employ our creatives who continue to show the world what Toronto is capable of, and nuture our future.
A short film, a series, a resource, a guide.
May I present to you: danceTO
FILM FESTIVAL
2023
TIFF
Initial project is a short film pulling back the curtain to the world on the Toronto street dance communities.
Toronto has made legends; Trevor, Frank Boogie, Leon, Luther, Ponytails, Mariano, Director X just to name a few. Iconic music videos were shot and filmed here using local talent. Much like the hip hop community evolved over time, so did the dance community in Toronto. From basement gatherings, to importing homemade movies of international parties to try and learn new styles or moves, to the club scene, to teaching street dance styles in studios...
But then also the parts that weren't so glorious - having to find ways to support oneself, having to travel internationally to grow one's career, the pandemic...
This is not only our story. It's our future.
SERIES
This is where we will get the opportunity to dive into all the styles that make up Toronto's multicultural and diverse dance communities, and also touching on major cataclysts of change like the end of club culture, bringing Redbull events to Canada, the pandemic and social media.
This is where DanceTO truly gets to work, being an active collective.
The EVENTS page will help anyone new or old to the city keep up with what's going on, eventually event hosting our own events. We can also be a source of information for those trying to come in and learn, and a connector for those looking to support or hire.

We have the support of the community, all we need now is to amplify our voices.
Evolutions in technology, the music industry, social media - it will all cause our community to grow and evolve as well. It's time to show the world where we are from.
